Voices of the Founders/No to Reparations for Climate Damage

Voices of the founders

The founding Fathers had a different idea for the definition of independence. According to the article, independence was having enough land to produce a sustainable living without being in debt or reliant on someone else and freedom meant to be independent of the will of someone else.  In addition, independence meant that each individual had the opportunity to obtain the desire living standards according to each individual’s skillfulness and determination. I found interesting Madison’s thought on poverty that poverty did not intervene with personal rights, rather the psychological effect of wanting to become successful in a place full of opportunities.

No to Reparation for Climate Damage

Negotiators form nearly 200 countries have been meeting at the U.N. climate summit in Warsaw, Poland to lay the foundations for a new global climate treaty. Nitin Sethi, senior assistant editor at The Hindu, revealed U.S. climate change negotiations papers that opposed efforts to help developing countries adapt to climate change, “the U.S. delegation is worried the talks in Warsaw will “focus increasingly on blame and liability” and that poor nations will be “seeking redress for climate damages from sea level rise, droughts, powerful storms and other adverse impacts.” It is shocking and sad to see an envoy for climate change reject the reality of what has been proven. It shows the resistance of sustainability that people still carry due to political issues.

The Corporation/Battle in Seattle

The documentary, The Corporation, shows the expansion of business corporations.  Corporations have the legal rights of a person.  Corporations gain these rights as a person in the decision of 1886 case in which the fourteenth amendment s, in which corporations as “person” has the same rights as human beings. The movie main purpose is to show the disregard the feelings corporations have for other people, and the failure to conform to social norms and to follow the law.

The battle in Seattle is a great eye opening movie. It tells the story of the WTO protests in Seattle which I did not know what the WTO was. It shows the constant struggle in which people are tired of world government organizations which its only purpose is to gain profit. The film is an inspiration to raise the voice and awareness against those organizations which only harm progress of human beings. It also shows dramatically the great struggle people have to go through in order to have their voice heard. The film does not only shows the struggle towards sustainability but the amount of energy , work and sacrifice one has to make in order to transform the way towards a better future.

Cultural Creatives/Drive

It is amazing to see the shift on Ray Anderson, from not knowing what to say about sustainability to traveling around the world giving lectures to companies and environmental groups. I must read the book The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken. It seems I can clear my own vision for the world.  Ray’s vision is to create the next industrial revolution.  He says, “Unless we become part of the solution, it’s over, and our great-grandchildren won’t have a world worth living in.” (11) According to the reading Cultural Creatives are the ones that carry an authentic personality in which they are consistent with what they believe and what they say. Cultural Creatives explore and look for ways to live their values in life. Real Cultural Creatives follow their passion and have a vision greater than them; it is more of a world-wide vision. According to the reading becoming a cultural creative is challenging, some Cultural Creatives are in and out of their own passion because many people resist changed.

I believe the video Drive: The surprising truth about what motivate us, it is very interesting though changing video. I always thought profit was the number one key for a corporation to succeed but Dan Pink places his perspective in a completely different point of view. In the video Dan Pink demonstrates that purpose is the key to success rather than profit. I found interesting his research and examples, he really conveys his point of view. Also, it is a great business model to follow if I would open a business.

Complex Adaptive Systems/We feed the World

Slime mold has been the center of attraction for many scientists for the past two centuries. The slime behavior is so odd that it require thinking outside traditional disciplines. Since slime mold cells are pretty simple, they attract attention from different disciplines because of their great example of coordinated group behavior. Evelyn Keller’s challenge the pacemaker hypothesis did more than generate a series of knowledgeable trends.  Students can now learn about “self-organization studies.” On the other hand the discovery of the slime mold behavior in which they are bottom-up systems not top-down, they get their commands from below. This new behavior led to a more intellectual studies, emergence is the movement form low-level rules to higher-level rules.

We Feed the World is a great eye opening movie. It tells the reality of what food industries have done to nature in order to produce great quantities of food supplies.  It explains the difference between small caught fish boats and the big company’s boats.  The movie also goes into detail about explaining the production of tomatoes and the condition in which the workers live in the fields. It shows the massive amounts of amazon land companies have been deforesting in order to plant soy beans.  The movie shows an interesting interview with the CEO of Nestle in which he explains that water needs to be privatize so people will care more about water.  This is a must see movie because it takes you to places and practices about companies that you will not imagine.
